10 Natural Detox Remedies
Here are 10 Natural Detox Remedies to help you with whatever you are detoxing from. I’m not just talking about things to help you when you’re doing a juice cleanse. Because that’s not the only time we’re detoxing. Our body naturally removes tons of toxins from our body everyday, not just when we do a Whole 30, or a Dry January. These toxins might be environmental, but they don’t always have to be. They can hormonal, or even produced from our own bodies. Stress hormones have their purpose, but once we are out of that stressful situation, or if we are in it for too long those chemicals can be toxic. The food we eat, the air breathe, the medications we can take, can all increase our toxic load.
The symptoms of detox can be mild from a low grade headache to severe reactions that can heave serious effects on our overall health. The good news is that typically we are better off once we get these toxins out of our body. The problem becomes when we make a drastic change in lifestyle, or our diet and all of these toxic substances are released at once. It’s uncomfortable, and the body doesn’t like to be uncomfortable, so it creates these symptoms to get us to slow down the process. The problem is that we will be better off once we eliminate the toxins, as long we can tolerate the symptoms. This list is simple things that you can do to support your body and make the detox a little quicker, more efficient and alleviate some of the dreaded side effects. Get those toxins out ASAP!
Here is the List of 10 Natural Detox Remedies
1. Water, Water, Water
As we all know, water is crucial for all of our bodys daily functions, but it’s even more important when we’re Detoxing. You’re kidneys need water properly flush all the toxins out. When the kidneys don’t get enough water and can’t function properly. This causes the liver to fill in and take on the role of eliminating toxins from our systems. Normally, one of the liver’s big jobs is to metabolize stored fat into a usable form of energy. But when the liver is busy doing the kidneys’ job, it becomes unavailable to metabolize stored fat.
It’s not all about drinking plain water though. That can get boring, and personally I hate boring. Add some lemon to your water, plus it’ll give you an extra detox boost. There are also other ways water can help you remove toxins. Water is also useful externally: baths and saunas can help detoxification. Hot water increases blood flow and capillary action near the surface of the skin, causing faster release of toxins. The heat also increases sweating and opens up pores.(1)
2. Milk Thistle
The main ingredient in milk thistle is silymarin is a powerful antioxidant. Researchers have found that silymarin can be an effective treatment for alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic hepatitis. Milk Thistle can help the body with removal of heavy metals as well (2.) However, you should be aware that Milk Thistle may effect certain medications. This is important if you take any medications that are broken down by the same liver enzymes. As with all herbs and supplements if you are unsure if it’s safe for you, talk to your health care provider. This is the brand I use, and get mine delivered to me right from amazon, available here. Milk thistle is top of my list on the 10 Natural Detox Remedies for good reason!
3. Activated Charcoal
Maybe you’ve heard of it as a recent fad, in making black food. But did you know Activated Charcoal can be a very effective tool when helping you detox? What is it? Activated charcoal comes from burning a carbon source like wood or (better yet) coconut shells. The substance is “activated” by high temperatures, creating millions of tiny pores. These pores then capture, bind and remove heavy metals, bacteria, and intestinal gases. (3) This process is called Adsorption, that is not a typo I did not mean absorption. It binds to the toxins on the surface level. As the Charcoal gets flushed from your system, it removes the toxins as well.
People even take it for bloating, gas, or if they’ve overindulged on alcohol the night before. However, you should be aware that it can also bind to nutrients. So there is no point in adding Charcoal to your daily juice shot. Make sure you take it 2 hours before or after you eat. I take mine about an hour before bed, and I don’t take it every day. You also want to make sure it’s food grade and made from coconut shells. This is the brand I love, Order here from Amazon. Also, it is GREAT to add to when you’re brushing your teeth. It’ll whiten your teeth without ruining your enamel. Just add a bit on your toothbrush, brush for a minute, and rinse your mouth out.
4. Ginger & Turmeric
For centuries healers have used Ginger for it’s medicinal properties. This is because of its ability to “cleanse the body by stimulating digestion, circulation, and sweating. Its digestive actions may serve to cleanse the build-up of waste and toxins in the colon, liver, and other organs.(5) Dr. Axe references how Ginger can be used to treat fungal and bacterial infections, nausea, even stomach ulcers.
Turmeric is mainly thought of for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, it can also help boost immunity and even increase the production of some liver enzymes.(6) Both your immune system and liver are under tremendous stress during detox and may need extra support. My favorite way to get Ginger and Turmeric, is with this Healing Ginger Turmeric Tonic recipe, in fact I’m enjoying a cup right now 🙂
No list of detox remedies would be complete without exercise. It’s not necessarily the exercise itself that helps you detox, it’s what exercising does that allows the body to help itself detox. Aerobic activity flushes out the lungs, and cleanses the skin as we work up a sweat. It also increases blood flow promoting better circulation to pump white blood cells through the body and help organs cleanse themselves effectively(4). All of this is a helpful way to speed up the bodies natural detoxing processes and get the toxins out quicker.
However, you want to make sure you take it easier than you typically would. High intensity and heavy lifting can actually have the reverse effects of what you want.
6. Dry Brushing
Dry brushing is the ancient practice of brushing dry skin with a natural-bristle brush in order to stimulate the lymphatic system and exfoliate your skin. This technique can help detox your body by stimulating your lymphatic system to remove cell waste, environmental toxins, and pathogenic organisms more efficiently. (7)
Number 7 on our our list of Natural Detox Remedies is fiber. Fiber is important for detox for several reasons. Firstly Fiber is necessary for cleansing bowel movements that eliminate body toxins and waste. The last thing you want to is to have all the toxins you are getting rid of pool in your colon and get reabsorbed back into your body. Secondly, dietary Fiber can increase the activity of antioxidant and detox enzymes in your liver. It can alter bile acid pools. These pools are involved in liver metabolism and the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins.
This is the Fiber I take daily and can’t recommend enough. When you think Meta-Mucil, you think old people, or at least I know I did. But it does wonders for you, not just in detox. Fiber helps control appetite, regulates blood sugar, supports gut health, and can help you lose weight. You can order here right from Amazon. I’ve tried a bunch of brands, and in my opinion, this one works the best.
8. Green Tea
Green tea is packed with natural polyphenols that support the body’s normal detox system. Polyphenols work in two ways: they have a direct impact on your liver, the body’s primary detox organ, and they’re antioxidants that fight free radicals. (8) Free radicals are simply molecules that are unstable, meaning they need an extra atom, usually oxygen. They scour the body trying to take that atom from healthy cells, antioxidants like green tea, freely give up their extra atoms to save the healthy cells.
9. Extra Sleep
We all know sleep is important, it’s when our body recharges and regenerates. But did you know that the cells in your body physically change when you’re asleep, making it easier to rid your body of toxins? You might find yourself extra tired during a detox, this is perfectly normal, if you need a nap or to sleep in a later, let yourself do it. Your body is working extra hard, the fatigue should be just temporary, by increasing your sleep a little more during a detox, you’re likely shortening the time overall time.
10. Bone Broth
So much of our detoxing happens in the gut, and the all-important gut microbiome. Bone broth has so many benefits to support gut health. It can also alleviate some of the detoxing symptoms and add collagen and amino acids, which are crucial in repairing and healing. Dr. Axe goes into extensive detail about the link between bone broth and reducing inflammation and supporting the immune system. Again, an essential part of detoxing. Make sure you are using high-quality broth from high-quality bones. Remember, it’s all about minimizing the burden on our system, so we don’t want to add anything we don’t want. I love making my own with this simple Instant Pot Bone Broth recipe. If I don’t make my own, my go-to brand is Bare Bones. Not a sponsored post, just a brand I stand behind. Order here right from amazon.
